Arsenal Football Club made a significant economic and social contribution during the 2022/23 season, injecting over half a billion pounds into the UK economy. According to an independent report by Ernst & Young (EY), the Gunners delivered £616 million in economic value, with £425 million directly benefiting the club’s home borough of Islington.
This landmark report marks the first time Arsenal’s economic and social impact has been quantified, shedding light on the broader influence of one of England’s most storied football clubs. Beyond financial contributions, Arsenal supported over 4,400 jobs across the UK and generated an impressive £228 million in tax revenue.
The Emirates Stadium played a central role in driving this impact, attracting 1.6 million supporters throughout the season. This influx of fans provided a substantial boost to the local economy, benefiting businesses in and around Islington.
Socially, Arsenal’s community initiatives had a wide-reaching impact. EY’s findings revealed that 14,000 people participated in programs organized by the club, underscoring Arsenal’s commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and driving progress in their local and extended communities.
Richard Garlick, Arsenal’s managing director, expressed pride in the club’s contributions both on and off the pitch. “Arsenal brings so much to our community beyond the football we play,” he said. “Creating a sense of belonging and driving progress in our communities has been central to who we are since we were established in 1886. We cherish that heritage and the positive impact we continue to make.”
Garlick also highlighted the significance of publishing Arsenal’s first-ever Economic and Social Impact Report. “EY’s independent analysis shows the economic contribution that we make to the local and national economy, delivering £616 million of economic value to the UK. We hope the report, along with the stories shared by people in our local community, will bring to life the contribution Arsenal makes to the prosperity of the local communities we serve and the impact we have beyond Islington too.”
The findings highlight the dual role Arsenal plays as both a footballing powerhouse and a driver of economic and social progress. From supporting thousands of jobs to uplifting local communities, the club’s reach extends far beyond matchday performances. As one of the Premier League’s most influential clubs, Arsenal’s impact is a testament to the potential for sports organizations to contribute meaningfully to society.
With the release of this report, Arsenal has set a benchmark for transparency in documenting their broader influence, positioning themselves as leaders not only in football but in community engagement and economic support.
